Expect more home-grown stuff to be the norm. Some smart businesses are so savvy they have tapped into this trend by snapping up successful, home-grown 'gurus' videoing from their bedrooms or kitchens and turned them into ambassadors to promote their own brands and to leverage that home-guru's success (traffic and fans) for their own advantage. There are many channel success stories of 'ordinary' people who have 'made it' this way, in the cosmetics and skin-care and music industry.

While this is true so far and has served well in the past, it would be amiss not to mention that going forward it is advisable to lift your game ie. create high quality videos, for long term success. The latest public news is that Youtube (which turned 8 on the 23-4-2013) is investing heavily in the quality of its content. The ability to survive and compete successfully for any online business is to be able to evolve to meet the needs and demands of the times.

As we have observed the site continues to evolve and improve with regard to function and navigation, user-friendliness, openness to feedback, etc. You have the ability to improve video quality as you upload eg. stabilise your video is if it is shaky, crop your video if it has too much 'dead-space' around it, brighten your video if it is too dark (under-exposed), brand your videos, promote your other videos, entice new prospects to subscribe and now, promote your channel with your very own advertising billboard, banner-space (cf. the 'new look' YT - similar to the header space on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+), etc.. With the old format most users were restricted to text only on the RHS of their homepages.

You also have the option to create videos on the fly - fast and easily - without uploading onto Youtube, using images that you have already uploaded onto other platforms eg. Blogger, with a large repertoire of audio backgrounds to select from for your video backing.

Create attractive graphics, and upload them to your site - website, blog, social media accounts ...

Then pin these using the Pinterest Pin-It App (get the code from Pinterest) rather than upload them directly from your computer.

Ensure that you have inserted your URL on your images and also next to your pin (as 'comments').

Share the pin on group boards for viral traffic...if your pin is relevant to your board's interests and your pin offers high value (eg. infographics) then it stands a good chance of going viral and pinners won't hesitate to pin them, and in turn their followers will also get to view and repin these pins.

Be creative and use attractive images and colours combined with interesting text written in an interesting font/s and colours ... remember to tag your own images with your URLS / name so that no matter where your images are embedded people can find their way back to you (Tip: fill in the "Alt text" box after uploading).

Once you have pinned onto your pin board, share it with your Facebook friends, twitterers, etc.
Before the new changes you could with one click, share with your Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter followers simultaneously (if you have configured your Fan Pages on Facebook correctly).

However with the new look, Pinterest has not kept these features that were so useful before as it allowed you to automate and leverage your post from Pinterest to the other two major social media platforms. So if you have switched to the new look, you will have to on-post to the other two platforms MANUALLY.

TIP 1: A good way to encourage people after they have had a 'conversation' (comment, like, repin, follow) with you is to follow them if they have pinned, commented, or liked one of your pins. A little appreciation (and reward) goes a long way towards good interpersonal relationships.

TIP 2: The art of getting maximum punch from your PIN is to (more than) sync your image with your text and vice versa (and also place them on the right board/s). TIP 3: If you are pinning something to sell, state your price - more views and sales occur when there is a price attached; this applies to houses as well and yes, you could promote property... and it's free. When you place the '$' sign against a numeral, this will show up against your pin as the 'price'.

  • Pin numbers showing on top of each board (red circle)

With the 'New Look':
  • boards have a cleaner, smarter, less cluttered look
  • in the BIO area, the website URL is now larger and visible
  • Board thumbnail sits on white background
  • title of each board sits on top, on LHS, in smaller font-size
  • group icon sits on top, on RHS (if it is a group board)
  • tabs are confined to the LHS and RHS above the boards for a cleaner look
  • categories tab - sits above your bio on the top LHS

A pin's new, bigger look.

The pins are bigger, more attractively displayed and detailed and the navigation is more convenient. When you upload your pin, remember to enter your url. This will now prominently display as a 'website' button above the pin (yellow arrow) which will encourage people to click on it for more information.

If you pin from a website you don't even need to enter an url because this is captured automatically within the 'website' button!! Isn't that so cool? Watch my video as I demo this!

You can easily access the rest of the pins from the same board without navigating away from your pin as they are located on the RHS (cf. black circle).

Now look below to see the "other pins" that were also pinned (black circle, green arrow), so now you know about the other interests of your target market.

Business Analytics:


Now you can track your statistics but only if you have a BUSINESS Account. And analytics are only available if you confirm your website URL and you convert to the new look. So how do you convert
  • to the NEW LOOK? 
  • to a Business account?
Here are the steps for switching to the new look: Login, click your icon, then click the switch link (last one in the drop-down box). Warning: this is a permanent change ('Ready to switch for good?')!


Switching from a personal to a business account (watch the video below):
  • Login via business.pinterest.com 
  • click the CONVERT button (top RHS)
  • follow the steps - fill in your contact name, email, bio (do not exceed the specified character count limit or a red highlight will appear - adjust - until all the boxes look white)
  • remember to agree with their contract (TOS - terms of service)
  • verify your website URL - via a variety of options eg. file upload or meta-tag.
  • addons for sharing, etc. - select and follow the process, according to your needs. 



Note: the analytics are based on information regarding your website - pins coming from there, traffic to your website from the pins on Pinterest, etc. To view click on your icon and the analytics link.
