You Dont Understand Business, If You Don't Understand People!

Simon Sinek: About TRUST and BUSINESS

This is a Brilliant Discussion on the Art of Doing Business:

What builds trust; what is a community; generosity and fulfilment; real interaction versus digital; why it's important to have a (genuine) desire to help versus the "WITFM*-focus" of today (social responsibility towards one's community); and authenticity - are some of the main points.

Technical expertise will only take you so far, but your belief systems are what will attract the die-hard fans, your engaged, faithful following because they trust you due to the sharing of the same belief systems.

It's why Apple does so well. You're not just buying a product (an excellent product at that) but everything else that Apple symbolises, that resonates with the beliefs of their fan base.

Main points:
  • to be authentic you do not chop and change what you ARE and BELIEVE IN to conform to everyone's wishes or expectations,
  • you have your own standards and uphold them - you do not settle for anything less than what you stand for,
  • that the flags of your belief and conviction that fly on your masthead will attract those with the same beliefs - ie. they will find you and TRUST you - a good thing because
  • this results in a very strong following - a loyal, engaged fan-base
  • so don't expect to attract everyone - just those who share similar core beliefs
  • to be trustworthy, you need to be authentic, ie., BE YOURSELF
  • when you've gained their trust you can influence them and more easily
  • face-to-face meetings foster Trust more than non-face-to-face/ virtual meetings.
  • that generosity has far-reaching, positive effects, it begets more generosity!
  • true generosity is giving without expecting anything else in return
  • the reward of (genuine) giving is the feeling of fulfilment (cannot be bought, only earned).
  • business is really about knowing how to relate / engage with PEOPLE - if you understand people and lose the 'WITFM-attitude' and focus instead of genuinely wanting to HELP others and have GENEROSITY OF SPIRIT, then you have the makings of a successful business.
  • it's not difficult to engage with people - we all do it naturally, whether it's dating, making friends, striking up a conversation with strangers, etc.
  • Less of the 'Me', more of the 'YOU'!

The HEART and CORE of ANY Business is - PEOPLE!

Therefore the Art of doing business is just as important, if not more, than the Science of doing business where you may not be able to quantify or measure your ROI directly, but has a large impact because of the 'soft' benefits this confers (eg. fulfilment, feel-good factor, goodwill, social investment/ return). This has indirect but positive and far-reaching effects on your workforce, the surrounding community and the perception of your business brand and ultimately your business success.

Famous Quotations by John F. Kennedy:

Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what YOU can do for your country.

If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.

*Footnote: WITFM - "what's in it for me"
